After 93 days in the NICU, Santiago's miraculous strength and the thoughts and prayers of many have brought him home safe and sound. Erwin and I want to express our gratitude to everyone for all your support during this difficult time.
I apologize that the updates stopped at the end of March. Once I was able to start nursing and participating more in Santiago's care at the hospital, the days became very long. His PDA closed on it's own without surgery, the follow up brain scan showed no bleeds, and after many off again/on again attempts to remove all respiratory support, he was finally able to stay off the nasal cannula after the 5th try.
One last hurdle he faced was an eye disease called Retinopathy of Prematurity, which he developed in his left eye. It progressed to Stage 2 of 5 (stage 5 being retinal detachment). After many weeks of monitoring (stage 3 would require surgery), the eye specialist we saw today said that the vessels in his eyes are now fully mature (no more ROP).
We are beyond grateful that Santiago escaped all surgeries and was discharged without any monitors or medication. Please join us in celebrating his homecoming by watching this slideshow of our little Storm Trooper's journey.
